Time For Flu Shot

October 1, 2010

Dr. Henry Cheng

Influenza is a viral infection causing fever, headache, muscle aches, malaise, upper respiratory or gastro-intestinal symptoms. It is highly contagious. Despite advancement in modern medicine, this condition is still prevalent in the colder seasons and there is no effective drug that will kill the flu bug. Influenza is especially dangerous in the elderly and people with chronic illnesses.

A vaccine is a small amount of the virus introduced purposely into the body so that the immune mechanism of the body produces specific antibodies against the viral antigens. Should a massive invasion of the same virus occur subsequently, the body will be equipped with the necessary antibodies that will neutralize the virus.  Immunity from vaccination is short lasting, so yearly vaccination is recommended, particularly for high risk individuals including the elderly, the debilitated and people who work with the public.    The flu shot is scientifically proven to be effective in cutting down both the incidence and severity of influenza.   People who are concerned with the side effects of vaccination should take a dose of homeopathic Sulfur 30CH just before and just after the injection.

For those who opt for the alternative, and for those who want to complement the flu shot, a popular homeopathic program consisting of 3 remedies can be used.  Take THYMULINE 9CH once weekly for 5 weeks.  Also take INFLUENZINUM 9CH once weekly for the same period (on a different day as you take Thymuline).  Have some Oscilloccinum (Anas Barbariae Hepatis et Cordis 200 CH) on hand.  As soon as you experience the first symptom of flu (e.g. a scratchy throat, a little headache, neck stiffness, dizziness, malaise, a stuffy nose, a sneeze, etc.), you should take 3 doses of Oscilloccinum on the first day followed by a couple more doses the next day.  This will “abort” the flu, or shorten the illness at the least.  The current year’s Influenzinum is usually not available till the end of October or early November.

Good nutrition, a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are the key to minimize risks.  Studies done in Germany and in other European countries have shown that the herb Echinacea can enhance immunity against the flu, especially when combined with Baptisia and Thuja (Esberitox).   Daily Vitamin C or a good combination anti-oxidant (e.g. Oxygenics) also helps.

Many serious medical conditions may present as a flu-like illness.  If a “flu” won’t quit in 10 days, it has to be investigated by a qualified medical practitioner.
