Enlarged Prostate and Frequent Urination

October 20, 2023

By Lyle Sunada, R.Ph.

In honor of Movember, I would like to focus on a particular men’s health issue, prostate health. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition characterized by the noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. As men age, the prostate gland often grows, leading to a variety of urinary symptoms, including frequent urination, nighttime urination, difficulty in voiding, urinary leakage, and incomplete emptying of the bladder. BPH is so common in aging men (50% of men by age 60 and 90% of men by age 85) that generally if you live long enough you will likely experience BPH symptoms. While conventional treatments exist, many individuals seek alternative options, such as natural supplements, to alleviate the discomfort associated with BPH and frequent urination.

One of the most widely used natural supplements for managing BPH symptoms is saw palmetto. Derived from the fruit of the saw palmetto plant, this supplement is believed to help reduce inflammation and the enlargement of the prostate. Several studies have suggested that saw palmetto may improve urinary flow and alleviate symptoms like frequent urination.

Another natural supplement used for BPH and frequent urination is beta-sitosterol, a plant sterol found in various plants. Beta-sitosterol has been shown to improve urinary symptoms and promote a healthier urinary flow. It is believed to work by inhibiting the activity of enzymes responsible for prostate cell growth and reducing the inflammation associated with BPH.

Rye grass pollen extract is another natural supplement that has demonstrated efficacy in managing BPH symptoms. Its mechanism of action involves relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, allowing for better urine flow and reducing the urgency and frequency of urination.

While commonly known for its sting when touched, stinging nettle has also been used as a natural supplement for managing BPH symptoms. Nettle root extract is believed to have anti-inflammatory effects and may help inhibit the growth of prostate cells.

Two products that I often recommend contain all of the above ingredients and they are Prostate Perform (by New Roots Herbal) and Prostate Matrix (by Cytomatrix).

Prostate Matrix additionally contains pygeum, which is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the size of the prostate gland and improve urinary function. It also contains Maca and American Ginseng extract which are tonics that may help with sexual function and libido.

Prostate Perform contains 16 synergistic ingredients in its full-spectrum formula and I have had some patients tell me that they have seen results within 10 days.

While natural supplements can offer relief for individuals experiencing BPH and frequent urination, you should prioritize regular medical check-ups and screenings to monitor prostate health and ensure the timely management of any potential complications like prostate cancer.
