Q.: I was recently diagnosed with varicose veins in my legs. My doctor told me to sit down and elevate my legs whenever possible, but I stand up for my job. Is there anything else I can do to help my condition?
A.: You should consider wearing compression stockings. They have gradually increasing elasticity going up the leg and can help to return venous blood and excessive fluid to the circulatory system. The stockings have to be worn for at least 8 hours a day while you are in the upright position. The lower compression strengths do not require a prescription. Higher compression strengths may be covered by your work health benefits with a prescription. Check with a certified compression stocking fitter or your physician to ensure they are appropriate for you.
