Growing and Keeping Healthy Hair

May 17, 2023

Hair is one of the first things we notice about people and it can contribute greatly to one’s self-esteem. For most people, hair that is clean, well-groomed, voluminous, lustrous, and natural is considered attractive. Proper hair care and nutritional supplementation can promote healthy hair.

The hair shaft consists of three layers. The outer most layer (the cuticle) protects the middle layer (the cortex) and the inner layer (the medulla) from damages. You get split ends when the cuticle is worn off. These need to be cut because dead cells cannot be regenerated. Blow-drying, direct sunlight, chlorine, harsh shampoos, gels and sprays can damage the cuticle. Using a gentle cleansing agent is important. Products such as “HAIR SCIENCE 82s” have multiple benefits. Babassu oil is a plant-derived oil with cleansing properties that can also help condition. Panthenol (aka Provitamin B5) helps fortify collagen in the hair, promoting elasticity and hair strength. Phytokeratine is included to prevent damage from heat-styling and UV radiation. Most unique is the inclusion of Saw Palmetto, which has been clinically shown to help reduce hair loss.

The cortex and the medulla of the hair shaft are made of proteins, giving the hair shaft elasticity and volume. The formation of healthy cortex and medulla depends on proper intake of protein and specific nutrients. Formulas such as PURE ENCAPSULATIONS’ “HAIR/SKIN/NAILS ULTRA” has been use for many years to support the growth of healthy hair, skin and nails.

CANPREV has come out with a unique formula containing nutrients to support healthy hair growth (i.e., biotin, zinc, and vitamin B6) called “Healthy Hair” along with a blend of millet seed and wheat extract that strengthens the hair bulb such that the hair is anchored better, which means reduced hair shedding! This proprietary blend of millet and wheat increases cell proliferation in the hair bulb by increasing the anagen (growth) phase and reducing the telogen (resting) phase of the hair cycle. This means the hair stays in the follicle for longer. Along with the nutrients to build stronger hair, the end result is greater hair volume and density as well as softer and brighter hair.

The delivery of nutrients to the hair is through an organelle called the dermal papilla located right underneath the hair follicle. When this delivery mechanism is damaged as in circulatory disorders, hormonal imbalances, chronic stress, nutritional deficiencies, medication side effects, or infections, hair will stop to grow and may even fall off. Consult with your doctor to exclude any organic and treatable diseases before you decide to “grow” your hair with natural remedies.
