Q: Is there something safe that I can take for mental focus and concentration without that “wired” feeling?
A: Something called “Phosphatidylserine” (aka.“PS”) is an important structural component of cell membranes, especially in brain cells. The membrane is crucial for holding together the necessary enzymes, proteins, ion pumps, receptors, etc., that control the nutrients and toxins that go in and out of a cell, respectively. It has been observed that people taking PS as an oral supplement experience an improvement in mental acuity (“sharpness”), concentration, and learning. Thus, it is something that can nourish the brain, as well as promote brain function. Some prescription cognitive drugs function by enhancing the levels of the communication molecule called “acetylcholine” in the brain, and some studies show that PS can safely achieve a similar result. PS is also known to reduce levels of cortisol (the “stress hormone”) in the body, thereby elevating a person’s mood. The supplemental form of PS was initially isolated from bovine brain; now, it is mostly extracted from soy lecithin. “PS-100™” by AOR is vegetarian, and is best taken with a Co-Enzyme Q10 (“CoQ10”) and Omega-3 supplement. PS is quite safe to take, but do consult your pharmacist and physician team before you incorporate it into your day.
